Diamond Guide

Diamond Guide – Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

Choosing the right diamond is a meaningful decision—whether it’s for a gift, an engagement, or a personal celebration. At Avarta Jewellery, we want to make your diamond-buying experience simple, transparent, and confident.

This guide covers everything you need to know, from the 4Cs to certification and care.

1. Understanding the 4Cs of Diamonds

The value and beauty of a diamond are determined by the 4Cs. Here’s what each one means:

1️⃣ Cut – The Sparkle Factor

The cut determines how well a diamond reflects light.

A well-cut diamond:

  • Sparkles intensely

  • Looks brighter

  • Appears larger than its actual size

Types of cut grading:

  • Excellent

  • Very Good

  • Good

  • Fair

Tip: Always prioritise cut over everything else for maximum shine.

2️⃣ Colour – The Diamond’s Natural Hue

Diamond colour ranges from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow).

  • D–F: Colorless (premium quality, rare)

  • G–H: Near Colorless (great balance of price & appearance)

  • I–J: Slightly tinted (budget-friendly, still beautiful in yellow gold)

Tip: For white gold or platinum jewellery, choose G-H or higher.

3️⃣ Clarity – The Purity of the Diamond

Clarity refers to internal and external imperfections (called inclusions & blemishes).

Levels of clarity:

  • FL/IF: Flawless

  • VVS1–VVS2: Very Very Slight Inclusions

  • VS1–VS2: Very Slight Inclusions

  • SI1–SI2: Slight Inclusions

  • I1–I3: Included (visible imperfections)

Tip: Choose VS or SI grade for best value—the inclusions are not visible to the naked eye.

4️⃣ Carat – The Weight of the Diamond

Carat refers to the weight, not necessarily the size.

Examples:

  • 0.30 carat = small, elegant

  • 0.50 carat = classic & noticeable

  • 1.00 carat = bold and premium

Tip: Choose based on your style and budget—carat does not affect sparkle, cut does.

2. Diamond Shapes

Diamonds come in many shapes, each with a unique personality:

  • Round Brilliant – maximum sparkle

  • Princess – modern and sharp

  • Oval – elegant, gives a bigger look

  • Emerald – vintage, glass-like clarity

  • Pear – unique and classy

  • Cushion – soft, romantic shape

  • Marquise – elongated, makes fingers look slender

Choose a shape that matches your style.

3. Natural vs Lab-Grown Diamonds

Natural Diamonds

  • Formed over billions of years

  • Rare and timeless

  • Higher in price

Lab-Grown Diamonds

  • 100% real diamonds (not fake)

  • Same chemical & physical properties

  • More affordable

  • Eco-friendly option

Tip: If you're looking for a big, brilliant diamond at a lower cost, lab-grown is perfect.

4. Diamond Certification

Always buy diamonds that come with trusted certificates such as:

  • GIA (Gemological Institute of America)

  • IGI (International Gemological Institute)

  • SGL

A certificate ensures:

  • Authenticity

  • Accurate 4C grading

  • Transparency in pricing

5. Diamond Care Guide

To keep your diamond shining forever:

  • Clean regularly with mild soap & warm water

  • Avoid wearing while swimming or heavy work

  • Store in a soft pouch to avoid scratches

  • Get professional polishing every 1–2 years
